birds of the sierra

Golden eagle, Bonelli’s eagle, Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture, black vulture and eagle owl.

One of the ecosystems that stand out in Cabeza del Buey is the mountain range. There are three large mountain ranges found in Cabeza del Buey: the Sierra del Pedregoso, the Sierra de la Rinconada and the Sierra de Tiros, the latter being the second highest peak in the province of Badajoz, the Tiros peak, with an altitude of 980 meters. In addition to these large quartzite mountain ranges, there are some witness hills such as the Almagrera Head and the Cabezuela. These mountain ranges have large quartzite ridges that are an ideal refuge for large birds of prey and other species. The combination of mountain ranges, pastures and large expanses of grassland, together with farmland and wetlands such as rivers and reservoirs, provide an ideal setting for the conservation of highly endangered birds such as golden eagles, Bonelli’s eagles, imperial eagles, griffon vultures, black vultures, Egyptian vultures, black storks, goshawks and goshawks, black storks, goshawks, eagle owls and other small birds such as warblers, thrushes, grosbeaks, rock thrushes, rock thrushes, common and royal swifts, wood pigeons, European turtle doves, fringillids, mynahs, chickadees, red-billed choughs, blue tits and crested tits, among others. Undoubtedly the birds that stand out in this ecosystem are the large birds of prey, vultures, Egyptian vultures and black storks. The Cabeza del Buey mountains have a total of 3 pairs of golden eagles, 2 pairs of Bonelli’s eagles, 3 pairs of imperial eagles, two pairs of black storks and two pairs of Egyptian vultures. Except for the black stork, there has been an increase in the number of these species in recent years. From the town itself can be seen flying over these species that sometimes are very difficult to observe in other environments, and even in the months of December and January is not complicated to observe and hear on cold nights to eagle owls in the town, which come down to eat the abundant pigeons that breed in the town. The viewpoint of the Calvary Chapel, the Cross of the XX Century, the Puerto de la Nava and the Sierra del Aliso are ideal places for the observation of these rupicolous birds. In addition to the observation of these birds, in these outings you can see a wide collection of cave paintings painted in the shelters and caves of quartzite, some of them can be visited and signposted. These species can also be observed in the aforementioned witness hills, which are key points since they are located between the large mountain ranges and the hunting areas of the steppe areas.
